I’m a CELTA-qualified English teacher with IELTS teacher training and experience teaching international learners of different ages and English levels. My lessons are patient, supportive and practical. I adapt my teaching to each student rather than expecting every learner to work in the same way. I break difficult language into manageable steps, explain clearly, and give students plenty of opportunities to speak and use English with confidence. I can help learners strengthen their speaking, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing, as well as build the confidence to communicate more naturally in English. I have over 40 years of teaching experience, originally as a music educator, so I understand that lasting progress comes from careful listening, encouragement, clear explanations and teaching at the learner’s individual pace. Parents can expect lessons that are well prepared, personalised and focused on genuine progress.
Teaching approach
My lessons are personalised to each learner. I first identify what the student can already do, where the difficulties are, and what will make the biggest difference to their confidence and progress. I explain new language clearly and in manageable steps, then give students plenty of opportunities to use it themselves. Lessons are practical and interactive, with speaking, vocabulary, grammar, reading or writing activities chosen according to the learner’s needs. I also adapt as I teach. If something is too easy, too difficult or simply isn’t working for that learner, I change the approach rather than expecting the student to struggle through it.
Your first lesson
The first lesson is about understanding the learner as well as their English. I assess their current level, talk about their goals and identify the areas where they need the most support. For younger learners, I also take account of the parent’s concerns and priorities. From there, I plan lessons around the learner’s individual needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all programme.
Common questions
Do you set homework?
Yes, when it will help the learner make progress. Homework is purposeful and appropriate to the student’s level, goals and available time rather than being given simply for the sake of it.
How do you help a shy or hesitant learner speak English?
I create a supportive environment where students can speak without being afraid of making mistakes. I build up gradually from language they can already use, give them time to respond, and increase the challenge as their confidence grows.
